It’s been a very chaotic 24 hours of the Royal Wedding Watch since yesterday night. Meghan’s father, Mr. Thomas Markle, told TMZ that he would not be attending the Royal Wedding on Saturday and will thus also not walk his daughter down the aisle, as was planned and announced by Kensington Palace recently. The reason for this is, according to TMZ, that Mr. Markle doesn’t want to embarrass the Royal Family or his daughter (because of the fact that he made a deal with a paparazzi agency to take staged photographs of him getting ready for the wedding, for reported $100,000, and that other members of his family appeared in the media talking about Meghan in a rather negative way), and (possibly) because he suffered a heart attack last week.
The news very much appeared to be a shock to Kensington Palace staff too. They had to deal with a huge amount of media questions that followed the TMZ article. It took them to release a statement on behalf of Meghan, seemingly confirming that Mr. Markle will not attend the wedding:
KENSINGTON PALACE STATEMENT
‘This is a deeply personal moment for Ms. Markle in the days before her wedding. She and Prince Harry ask again for understanding and respect to be extended to Mr. Markle in this difficult situation.
However, a few hours ago, TMZ had another conversation with Mr. Markle, who now said that he will be attending the wedding and wants to walk his daughter down the aisle, as long as his doctors will allow him to travel to the UK. Meghan tried to call her father on Monday night after the news broke, but couldn’t reach him. Afterwards, she texted him, saying that she loved him and was concerned about his health. She apparently did convince him to come to the wedding, if his health allows it. A rather weird quote from the TMZ article: “I hate the idea of missing one of the greatest moments in history and walking my daughter down the aisle.” However, Mr. Markle seems to be in the hospital again, saying that he has been under intense pressure over the past months, and this has not been good for his health. There has been no statement from Kensington Palace on this (yet).
Meghan’s family and friends have been arriving in the UK over the past days and will be arriving in the UK later this week. It is not known if Meghan’s mother, Doria, has already landed in London from her hometown LA. However, we can be sure that the Royal Family and Meghan’s other supportive family and loyal friends will support her in this difficult time. It must be awful to have to go through something like this only days before your wedding.
Update, 15 May 22:30hrs: TMZ is now reporting that Mr. Markle will undergo a heart surgery tomorrow morning. He won’t be attending the wedding of his daughter, as he will be recovering. I want to wish Mr. Markle a healthy and private recovery. I can only hope that Meghan will find support with her loved ones in this difficult time in London.
Update, 16 May 22:30hrs: TMZ reports that Mr. Markle is out of surgery, alert and feeling relatively well. Doctors have implanted three stents into his blood vessels during the procedure.
Update, 17 May 11:30hrs: Kensington Palace released their first official statement concerning Mr. Markle on behalf of Meghan, confirming that he won’t be attending the wedding.
This post will be updated if the situation changes again.
