The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge leave the hospital with their son

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge just left the hospital with their baby son, who was born earlier today. The Duchess has just been in the hospital for twelve hours. She was safely delivered of a son at 11:01AM, after being admitted to the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London, just before 6:00AM this morning.

The newborn Prince of Cambridge is just over 7 hours old now. He was presented in a shawl by the company GH Hurt and Son Ltd. The company has a long-standing connection to the Royal Family. The little prince’s father, brother and sister were all presented in similar shawls on the steps of the Lindo Wing.

After returning inside to say goodbye to the hospital staff and put Baby Cambridge in his car seat, they walked to the car, that was standing ready for them to depart for Kensington Palace. Prince William carried the car seat with his son in it, and held the hand of his wife when they walked down the stairs to the car.

The Duke drove his wife and son home to Kensington Palace, where they will stay. It is expected that members of both families will visit tomorrow, and that the names of the baby will be announced on Wednesday. Sometime this week, the Duke will fill out the birth certificate and it will be published.

The Duchess is wearing a red Jenny Packham dress, Gianvito Rossi heels, and diamond and pearl earrings on loan from the Queen. She looks gorgeous and very happy!

A video of the departure can be seen below.

Prince George (4) and Princess Charlotte (2) visited their baby brother earlier this afternoon. They have already returned home to Kensington Palace.

It was furthermore announced that the Duke will take a few weeks of paternity leave to take care of his family of five (!!). There will be no extra child care hired. However, we can be certain that we will see the family (minus baby Cambridge) on May 19 for the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and after that for Trooping the Color on June 9.

A recap of the events of the day can be seen in our special live blog.
