The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visit Coventry

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are in Coventry today for a series of engagements. They arrived by train this morning in the city. The journey from London to Coventry took them around an hour. The Duke has visited the city before, but for the Duchess, it is her first official visit.

The Royal Couple’s first engagement of the day includes a visit the ruins of Coventry Cathedral and a walkabout to greet the waiting crowds. In November 1940, the old Cathedral (build in the 14th and 15th century) was destroyed by German bombs during the Coventry Blitz. Only the tower and part of the outer walls survived the bombings. The ruins are still very much present in the city. In 1956, HM Queen Elizabeth II laid the foundation stone of the new cathedral and it was consecrated in 1962. The building is very modernist in design and very different from the old Cathedral. To keep the connection between both buildings, the same type of stones was used for the new cathedral.

The Duke and the Duchess greeted the public before entering the Cathedral. They had a short tour through the ruins of the old building and met with locals. After the tour, they proceeded to the to the new cathedral.

After learning more on the cathedral’s history, TRH took part in the Conventry Litany of Reconcilliation. This prayer has been used for decades in the city and continues to be prayed on each day in a short service.

At the Rising Café, the Duke and Duchess had tea with former addicts. The Café is an opportunity for those who have overcome either drugs or alcohol addiction.

After having tea at the Rising Café, the Royal party headed to Coventry University to open their new Sceince and Health Building. The state-of-the-art facility is being used for training new nurses, midwives and paramedics. It uses the brand new technology and simulation techniques to give the students the opportunity to learn care for patients.

The Duke and Duchess met with students in various parts of the building. They visited a simulation surgery and an Ambulance Simulator.

Afterwards, they visited the Positive Youth Foundation to see the work they do for young people in the city. The organisation works with young people who are facing challenging situations in life and has been part of Coventry’s very succesful bid to become UK City of Culture 2021.

The Duchess wears a familiar bright pink coat by the British brand Mulberry today. We saw the coat before in December 2014 in NYC and again in March 2015 for a day of engagements in London. She choose her morganite Kiki McDonough earrings (debuted in 2015) and black gloves, clutch and suede Tod’s block heel pumps to go with the lovely coat. According to Richard Palmer from Express, HRH is also wearing a maternity dress by Madderson today (very likely a white one).
